Highlighters 101: Your Ultimate Glow Guide

By Holly Bartter

While contouring will always have a place in our hearts, the lure of the perfectly placed highlighter is growing stronger each season. There’s just nothing that can compare with the sheen – and celebrities, models and the team here at HFB are all dedicated glow-getters.

If you’re not quite sure how to navigate all the different formulas, we’ve put together a foolproof guide to make illumination easy.

Choosing the right shade:

There are no hard and fast rules for the colour of your highlighting products, as they are meant to be applied sheerly. If you’re porcelain skinned, an opalescent white, soft pink or pale gold will work best.

Deeper skin shades can explore a wider range of colours, from soft peach to copper – and if you’ve got an enviable bronze glow this summer then warm, shimmery shades will show it off.

Powder

The perfect companion for oily or combination skin, powder highlighters are a great first step for newbies. You can find them in both loose and pressed forms (pressed is more travel friendly!) and you can easily control the concentration of the product as you apply. If you find you have applied too much, just buff it out with some matte, translucent powder for a quick fix.

Liquid

Liquid illuminators are ideal for customising your glow. You can apply with precision and also blend them into your primer or foundation for an all-over boost. An added bonus is the soft-focus effect of a liquid – great for giving your complexion a pick-me-up on a morning when you’re feeling less than perky.

Our top picks:

Nude By Nature Soft Focus Illuminator (RRP $22.95)

Cream

The perfect mix of powder and liquid, cream highlighters pack a punch. This formula is best for those with a bit more experience, as they need to be blended out properly to avoid looking fake. If you’re heading out to an event and going full glam, then cream highlighters are the way to go, as they grip to the skin and hold up well throughout the night.

Our top picks:

MAC Cosmetics Cream Colour Base in ‘Pearl’ (RRP $36.00)
