This Month’s It-cessory: The Super Statement Necklace

We’ve always got one eye on the streets and one on the runway, and right now we’re taking style inspo from the editors that bring a certain strict-chic to the front row – starting with our accessories. Now needless to say spikes are having a major moment, popping up on everything from shoes to cuffs to clutches, but if you want to really kick it up a notch in the wardrobe department you’ll need a sharp statement necklace in your artillery.

There’s something very Givenchy/Saint Lauren Paris about teaming tough jewels with your tailoring – work a crisp button-up or structured leather into the equation to nail the look this second (French Vogue team eat your heart out… )

Hard-hitting gold pieces and flashes of fluoro look ace with khaki, so top up your trend count and team your necklace with an army anorak or camo-print piece. Add some leopard to the mix and a slash of red lippie and you’ve got yourself a mash-up!

Even the most streamlined, simple outfit can benefit from a rev-me-up accessory – a quirky shoe, a colour pop clutch or sparkly ear-cuff – but this month we’re all about the power necklace. If your style MO is cool, calm and collected – i.e you’re the type who loves nothing more than a true-blue denim shirt and a pencil skirt, a pointy pump and a Chanel 2.55, then a bold neckpiece will elevate your upscale-basics to a tee (we’re sure Olivia Palermo would attest to this.)

And if man-style classics are more your speed – think tweed overcoats, skinny-cut pants and belted trenches – a graphic necklace packs a glam punch against them (because borrowed from the boys doesn’t have to read, well, boyish.) Imagine how sleek a fitted black tux would look for after dark with a flash of gold on the neck and a slick of liquid liner…

We love the insouciant cool-factor of this lady’s look – denim + leather + gold neck deco = easy chic alert!

Ever since they hit the Marni and Louis Vuitton runways, collar necklaces have been big news – just ask the streetstyle set, who were quick to adopt this trend for the international show circuit. We’ve seen them popping their collars over pastel knits and 60s-style mod shifts, even layering them over playful prints a la Russian front-row fave Miroslava Duma (because sometimes an outfit just needs extra embellishment stat!) And we say Alexa would fall hard for this month’s feminine find, what with its lace detail and delicate chain…Ooh la love!

For proof this piece has outfit insta-lifting powers, try it out with a printed button-up and flared mini for the office or a tee and tailored shorts for off-duty – adorableness guaranteed. For evening, style it like Ms Chung with a lace LBD (hello, look-at-me texture.) Yes, here’s to prettying up your outfit in a nanenosecond.
